The AM112-001 chassis is different from the 485 examples of the Mexico produced by Maserati in the late 1960s.

It is one of three pre-production vehicles made at Maserati's request by three separate coachbuilders: Vignale, Bertone and Frua. Maserati opted for the design proposed by the first named and the final lines of the Mexico model, which owes its name to the victory of John Surtees at the GP of Mexico 1966 on a Cooper-Maserati T81, were finally signed Vignale.

The example bearing the Carrozzeria Frua signature, dressed in an “Amaranto” livery, has a passenger compartment upholstered in Connolly leather. The technical characteristics are identical to all Mexico.
